The Ashcroft and District Fall Fair has been cancelled for 2017; a decision that Jessica Clement, president of the Ashcroft and District Fall Fair Association, says was not an easy one to make, given the number of other local events that have been cancelled this summer.
She says the decision was made last week, after consulting with Kat Chatten of the Ashcroft and District Lions Club, which had taken on the running of this year’s fair. Chatten discussed the matter with her fellow Lions, and in light of recent events the decision was made to cancel the fair.
“They were waiting for funding to come through, so hadn’t finished planning,” says Clement. “We had to decide whether to cancel, or spend two weeks working frantically and then possibly see the event having to be cancelled at the last minute because of smoke. If that happened, we’d still have to pay the performers [who had been booked], because you can’t cancel them at the last minute.”
This year’s Fall Fair booklet had not been printed, and Clement says the plan is to produce a booklet in January of 2018 that will list all the regular categories, and which can be used annually if there are leftover copies. An insert listing any new categories, and the year’s sponsors, would be added later.
“We’re already carrying forward what we had planned this year for next year, when we’ll have an even bigger and better fair.”
