Taken advantage of

Feb. 4 RCMP received a complaint from a local support agency that an elderly man was being taken advantage of financially by a younger adult male in the community who had befriended him. The younger male allegedly had borrowed money for rental accommodations that were never rented, helped himself to the older man’s groceries, accepted money to pay bills for the older man that were not paid, and helped the older man move his household after which items had gone missing. Police are investigating the incidences, which occurred over approximately a six month period. Police advise seniors to be aware of their personal finances and to discuss the matter with trusted friends or family if they think someone is taking advantage of them.

Harassing texts

Feb 5 at 12:01 am a 21 year old Ashcroft woman called to complain that she was receiving derogatory texts and Face Book posts from a former friend who now lived in Princeton. Police tried to contact the 20 year old man without success. The complainant contacted the suspect’s mother who advised that her son sometimes did that when he was drunk. The complainant blocked the man’s phone number and no further contact was received.

Vehicle collision

Feb. 6 at 8:21 am police attended a collision between two vehicles at the intersection of Government St. and Ash St. in Ashcroft after a vehicle driven by a 30 year old Boston Bar man collided with one driven by a 41 year old Ashcroft man in the process of making a left hand turn. The Ashcroft man told police that he saw the other vehicle after starting his turn. He hit the brakes but continued sliding into the path of the other vehicle. The Boston Bar man was taken to Kamloops hospital after suffering minor cuts to his head. No charges were laid.

Bad weather

Feb. 6 at 1:23 pm police attended a jack knifed semi on Hwy 1 about 15 km west of Cache Creek. The vehicle was stuck in the eastbound lane, but traffic was able to move around it safely. The driver, a 58 year old Chilliwack man, said his chains broke while he was climbing a hill. KAL Tire was contacted to bring him out a new set of chains.

Truck and trailer

Feb. 6 at 1:37 pm Clinton RCMP attended a single vehicle accident on Hwy 97 at 16 Mile where a pickup towing a small trailer hit the ice and flipped into a ditch. There were no injuries. The truck was driveable, but the trailer had to be loaded onto a flatbed and towed. The driver, a 40 year old man from Lake Errock, was given a verbal warning about speed relative to road conditions.

Nowhere to go

Feb. 6 at 8:50 pm police attended a single vehicle accident on Hwy 1 about 35 km south of Cache Creek after a passing motorist reported the truck in the ditch. The sole occupant, a 21 year old Dawson Creek man, said he had been stuck there for several hours. The truck was pulled out of the ditch and he was able to continue on his way.

Pickup rollover

Feb. 6 at 11:03 pm police attended a vehicle rollover on Hwy 97 approximately 2 km north of Cache Creek. A witness advised that he was travelling at 90 kph and caught up with the slow travelling pickup truck very quickly. The truck tried to negotiate a corner and lost control and flipped. No one was injured. The six occupants all had ties to the Pavillion-Lillooet area, the youngest of them being 8 years old. The driver was a 34 year old Kamloops woman. There were no charges.

Fuel siphoned

Feb. 8 CN Railway reported that sometime overnight, someone had broken into a loader parked at their MacAbee site on Hwy 1. Fuel to the amount of about 100 litres had been siphoned from three vehicles. The CN police are investigating.

Computer scam

Feb. 8 at 10:44 am a Cache Creek resident reported what she thought was a possible computer scam. She said a male contacted her by telephone, saying he was from Microsoft and advised her that she had a virus on her computer. He asked he for information to give him access to her computer, but she refused. She had her computer checked out by a reputable technician later who told her there were no viruses on her computer. The public is reminded to be wary of unknown callers trying to gather information that would give them access to their personal finances and computer files.

Police emergency

Feb. 8 at 11:30 am police were called to a single vehicle crash on Hwy 97C about 10 km west of Ashcroft heading towards Logan Lake where an unmarked police car had gone off the road to the left, down a snowbank and through a barbed wire fence. The 37 year old plain clothes Kelowna RCMP officer was not injured. There were only minor scratches to the vehicle, which was pulled back onto the road. After a mechanical check, the officer continued on his way.
