Port Alberni RCMP are investigating a brazen mid day robbery attempt which occurred on Monday May 18th. At approximately 1pm, a 16 year old male was walking on the pathway on the east side of the dyke located off Gertrude Street when a male approached him and demanded his cell phone and wallet.

The suspect appeared heavily intoxicated, as was swaying, and slurring the few words he said to the victim. Despite his suspected inebriated condition, the suspect was able to swing a punch in the victim’s direction, however the victim easily dodged it and responded by striking the suspect in the face and knocking him down. The victim sustained minor damage to his hand while defending himself. The victim left the area after watching the suspect stumble to his feet and walk off in the direction of Blair Park. He did not appear to be seriously injured.

The suspect is described as an aboriginal male, in his early 20’s, weighing approximately 185lbs, wearing a black hoodie and grey pants.

After reporting the incident to his parents when he returned home, the youth called police. Due to the time delay and the number of people walking on the dyke at the time of the report, police were unable to locate witnesses or suspects to this crime. Police encourage local citizens to call 9-1-1 if they or anyone else is in immediate danger.
