ATV crash at bottom of Mount Washington sends two to hospital

Two people were hospitalized following an ATV (all terrain vehicle) accident shortly before 1 p.m. Monday near the base of Mount Washington.

Two people were hospitalized following an ATV (all terrain vehicle) accident shortly before 1 p.m. Monday near the base of Mount Washington.

A man and a woman were riding on a downward portion of Duncan Bay Main when the ATV went off the logging road and into the bushes, said Capt. Greg Lamb of the Courtenay Fire Department.

“Ambulance was there before us, we just assisted them with packaging the patients,” said Lamb, who figures the man and woman are both 30-something. “There was talk of a helicopter coming in, so we set up a landing zone, but the chopper was redirected to the hospital.”

The man sustained a gash to his forehead.

“There was a bit of a mixup about where they were,” Lamb said. “It took a second caller to finally figure out exactly where they were. They (ATV riders) called, but their cell signal showed way up by the medicine bowls, and it ended up being closer to the Mount Washington Parkway.”

Cumberland Fire Chief Mike Williamson assisted by unlocking a gate on the Mosaic Forest Management property, enabling ambulances and fire trucks to reach the man and woman.

Lamb said it was fortunate the pair were only about 500 metres from Duncan Bay Main.

“It wasn’t like they were way up in the mountains.”
