Greater Victoria will see expanded handyDART service hours that will benefit seniors and persons with disabilities, thanks to a funding lift by the province.
Greater Victoria residents, including those in Sooke, will benefit by an extra 4,000 handyDART service hours starting in September, said B.C. Transportation Minister Todd Stone in announcing $300,000 more in provincial funding.
The handyDART service is for people, including seniors, with permanent or temporary disabilities that prevent them from using fixed-route transit. The driver picks the customer up at their home and takes them to their destination. Passengers must register with B.C. Transit and book their trips in advance.
About 120,000 handyDart hours of service are currently provided in Greater Victoria.
“HandyDART serves Sooke twice a day on Mondays and Thursdays – that’s a parameter B.C. Transit placed on the service – and in general, anyone who books a ride gets a ride. You should note that bookings are generally made two weeks in advance,” said Drew Snider of B.C. Transit.
