B.C. Health Minister in Abbotsford for ‘seniors services’ announcement

Adrian Dix to speak at seniors home; unclear if stop is tied to languishing residential care project

Provincial health minister Adrian Dix will be in Abbotsford Monday for a media event regarding “senior services in the region.”

The purpose of the event, which is to be held at Menno Home, across from Abbotsford Regional Hospital, isn’t public yet, but Fraser Health has been trying for nearly five years to build more residential care facilities in Abbotsford.

In February of 2014, Fraser Health announced that it was moving forward with plans to build a “campus of care for seniors and a community health centre” on the site of the former MSA Hospital on McCallum Road.

A key pillar of Fraser Health’s strategy is improving supports for patients outside of hospital. But the McCallum Road property has sat vacant for years, with plans for new residential care facilities in Abbotsford languishing and revised multiple times. The latest plans called for Fraser Health to sell the bulk of the McCallum Road property and build residential care homes elsewhere in the city.
