The City of Maple Ridge has been been told by BC Hydro that it’s releasing water down the South Alouette River in order to lower the level of the Alouette reservoir.

The action comes after high rainfall and more heavy rain expected for tonight, Monday, says the city on its website.

The water was to be released starting at 5 p.m., Monday. The spill will see water hit about 42.5 cubic metres per second and water levels could reach to the top of the stream banks.

According to the BC Hydro Reservoir Phone line, there is 2.68 metres of freeboard in the reservoir.

“City of Maple Ridge staff will be monitoring conditions along the South Alouette and reminds all citizens living or engaged in recreation along the South Alouette to be aware of the potential for high and rapid water flow and refrain from getting too close to the water. Citizens who have property along the south Alouette are advised to monitor their properties closely during the day.”

If people have any questions about the water release they can contact the BC Hydro Reservoir Phone Line at 604-462-5409. If citizens spot any problems please contact our Operations Centre at 604-463-9581.
