B.C. man sentenced to 6.5 years over sexual exploitation, child porn charges

New Westminster man pled guilty to sexual exploitation, making child pornography in October

A B.C. man has been sentenced to 6.5 years in a jail after an investigation into sexual exploitation that began more than three years ago.

New Westminster Police said Tuesday (Oct. 24) that the man pled guilty to charges of sexual exploitation and making child pornography earlier this month and has since been sentenced. The man was a resident of New Westminster at the time of the offences, but due to a publication ban names connected to the investigation will not be released.

It was in August 2020 that a youth reported to New Westminster Police officers that they were a victim of sexual offences. Police say the victim was immediately provided support from the Victim Assistance Unit and the Specialized Investigations Unit took conduct of the investigation.

Police say the victim had been subjected to sexual offences over a period of years.

The investigation took about a year.

New Westminster Police say the Specialized Investigations Unit was created in 2018 to specifically investigate sexual offences, and investigations that “prioritize a victim-centered and trauma informed approach.”
