Bail hearing delayed for father charged with manslaughter

Twenty-year-old Warren Baader made his first physical appearance in Port Alberni Provincial Court on Wednesday, Nov. 30.

A bail hearing for Warren Alfred Baader, a Port Alberni man charged with manslaughter in the death of his two-month-old daughter, has been put off until Dec. 8.

Baader made his first physical appearance in Port Alberni Provincial Court on Wednesday, Nov. 30 expecting to go through a bail hearing; previously he has only appeared via video link.

Baader entered the courtroom handcuffed, wearing a red jumpsuit and waving to members of his family who were present for his appearance.

Defence lawyer Michael Ritzker said his client is seeking release and has no criminal history.

Ritzker said that Baader, 20, has been in custody for one month.

Gordon Baines, lead provincial Crown Counsel, said he was not prepared to go ahead with a bail hearing on Wednesday and it would have to wait.

Port Alberni RCMP were called to West Coast General Hospital on Oct. 28 after baby Molly arrived in medical distress. Baader was charged with aggravated assault following the RCMP’s investigation into the baby’s injuries.

The baby was later transferred to BC Children’s Hospital. After the infant died in hospital on Nov. 3, Baader was charged with manslaughter.

Leaving the court room on Wednesday, Baader appeared emotional with tears in his eyes as he waved goodbye to his family.

He will be back in Port Alberni court on Thursday, Dec. 8 at 2:30 p.m.
