Bamfield residents vote to borrow $600K for water treatment

Preliminary referendum results show convincing support for new plant

Bamfield residents have voted in favour of borrowing $600,000 to fund a new water treatment plant in their west coast community.

Preliminary referendum results released Saturday, Nov. 5 following general voting show 77 people voted in favour of the loan and 13 voted against.

The positive result will allow the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District, of which Bamfield is a member, to borrow $600,000 to construct a water treatment plant in Bamfield.

Island Health, who acts as the enforcement body for municipalities and regional districts within its mandate, has said the ACRD has until Jan. 31, 2018 to comply with provincial government drinking water regulations. A new water treatment plant will cost an estimated $1.5 million, $1 million of which has already been set aside in the ACRD’s budget.
