Cariboo Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett has called a pamphlet distributed in the riding and several others regarding the cost of the HST to citizens a “scare tactic.”
The pamphlet was preceded by a press release that claimed households in this riding would pay an estimated $8 million more under the HST scheme than under the PST/GST.
In a press release, the B.C. Federation of Labour claims that under the HST corporations will not pay approximately $2 billion a year in taxes while the citizens will pay $1.3 billion a year more.
The federation came up with the $8 million after estimating all British Columbians would pay $1.3 billion more under HST.
The federation then took that number and divided it by the population of the province and multiplied that number by the population of the Cariboo Chilcotin riding.
“To me this is a sheer scare tactic and I think it’s pretty low,” Barnett said.
