It’s time to wake up your green thumb and get ready to “help dress up the town”.

A brand new spring planting contest has just been announced by municipal hall for called Barriere Blooms.

“The project has been launched in 2019 to encourage community residents and businesses to plant flowers in front of homes and establishments as a group effort to help provide a bright and welcoming invitation to visitors that says ‘we care’,” commented District of Barriere Councilor Donna Kibble.

Kibble says she is excited to see the results as she knows there are many talented gardeners in the community “who love a challenge that involves creativity with their plantings.”

There will be three categories offered in the contest:

• Best Business – Merchants are being encouraged to plant flowers outside their place of business, with the winning entry receiving a Barriere Blooms Award Certificate and of course “bragging rights”.

• Best Resident Flowering Container – Participating Barriere residents are encouraged to plant flowers in unusual or decorative containers outside their residences. A contest representative will take a photograph of your display, which will then be available for the public to “vote for their favorite” at a barbecue in August. The winning entry will receive a $200 cash prize and “bragging rights”.

• Best Council Member Planter – District of Barriere Council Members will be planting flowers in the cedar planters located in Fadear Park. The winning planter entry will receive an Award Certificate and “bragging rights”.

“We are encourage the residents and business to use the colours pink, purple and white to help our town to look bright and inviting for residents and visitors alike,” says Barriere’s Deputy Corporate Officer Tash Buchanan.

Buchanan notes entry forms can be picked up at the District office (in the Ridge) or printed from the District’s website at www.barriere.ca.

Completed forms may be dropped off to the District Office in person at 4936 Barriere Town Road (either in the office or in the drop box), or sent by email to: inquiry@barriere.ca.

Kibble notes all entry forms must be received by the District no later than July 15, 2019.

“Public voting for all three categories will then take place,” said Kibble, “And the resulting winners will be announced at the Volunteer Barbecue in August.”
