Be bear aware

Residents living close to Holland Creek take note: A mother bear and two cubs have recently been spotted in the area.

A female black bear and her two cubs have been spotted roaming through the 200 block of Dogwood Drive recently, both by day and by night. One of the cubs was spotted as recently as the early morning hours of Sunday.A Chronicle reader who wishes to remain anonymous asks that residents of both Dogwood Drive and Bayview Avenue clean up any rotting fruit that may have fallen from their fruit trees so as to avoid attracting the bears.

Anyone who spots the bears is asked to contact the Conservation Officer Service at 1.800.663.9453.

And if the mother bear has a tag in either ear, that information would be of particular relevance to the COS.

As always, the Chronicle’s editorial staff makes a point of helping minimize risks to both humans and wildlife by publicizing urban wildlife encounters and sightings. Report encounters and sightings to us by phone at 250.245.2277, by email at news@ladysmithchronicle.com, or via Facebook.

Sightings and encounters can also be reported to the British Columbia Conservation Foundation. Through its Wildlife Alert Reporting Program, the BCCF posts sightings in real time to an interactive map of British Columbia.
