Bears have been spotted on Kelowna's Knox Mountain.

Users of Knox Mountain Park in Kelowna , as well as enthusiasts and residents living nearby are reporting recent bear sightings in park.

City officials say it’s not unusual to see bears in the park at this time of year and signs are in place to caution residents there are bears in the area.

Because  of that, the city is warning people to respect bears by anticipating and avoiding encounters with them whenever possible. It says anyone using natural parks should stay alert, travel in groups when possible, make noise and keep dogs leashed and on the trails. It warns bears can be aggressive, especially when defending their food or their cubs.

If you encounter a bear, reduce potential conflicts by staying well away from the animal.

Residents can notify either the Conservation Office at 1-877-356-2029 or the RCMP at 250-762-3300 if they feel threatened by a bear. (911 should be used in the case of an emergencies only) Residents are also reminded to be “bear smart” and follow useful tips from the WildSafeBC website, which include storing garbage in a secure building until collection day.
