A third of Abbotsford’s backyard bears has been dealt with this month.
Conservation Officer Don Stahl had set two live bear traps trying to catch the black bears that have been raiding bird feeders and garbage cans in east Abbotsford throughout June.
On Wednesday at about noon one of traps was sprung. Stahl had placed it in a cul de sac in Auguston, between a stretch of greenbelt and a subdivision.
“I’m guessing the bear popped her heard out of the forest, went to go to the homes, smelled the sardines (in the trap) and got caught.”
The bear was an a small adult female, about 100 pounds in size. Stahl released the bear on the north side of Harrison Lake.
He did the same with a small female who he had tranquilized, after it was treed by a dog on June 13.
Another black bear was put down by Abbotsford Police officers on June 24, after they decided it was showing no fear of man, and was coming brazenly onto decks and porches.
Stahl asks members of the public to still keep their garbage indoors or secured until pickup day, to take down bird feeders, and be cautious with other attractants.
There has been an inordinate number of bear calls in Abbotsford’s urban areas, and the city’s Bear Aware coordinator is speaking with residents about controlling attractants.
