Black Sage Butchers is looking to move to a new location on Main Street and the proposed location will be headed to a public hearing.

The hearing on July 12 will be open for residents to share their opinion on the proposal.

Black Sage Butchers is currently located on Station Street, but is looking at moving to a new storefront at 6234 Main Street.

The public hearing is part of the approval process as the zoning for the location doesn’t currently allow food or beverage processing-based businesses, which would also include wineries or distilleries.

Black Sage Butchers took possession of the property on June 16 according to the letter they had sent along with their request for the rezoning.

In their letter, they explained that they noted the larger location would require them to bring on more staff with the goal of hiring local staff.

“Although BSB primarily serves locals from the South Okanagan, Black Sage Butcher’s reputation has reached beyond this region,” reads the letter. “Drawing customers to a new location on Main St. will increase local and tourist traffic in Oliver’s downtown core, which could prove beneficial to neighbouring businesses.”

Town staff feel that any negative impact on Main Street will be minimal and are recommending the proposal be approved by council.

“The proposal will help to fill another empty retail space along Main Street, leading to more local and tourist traffic in the downtown core. The detriment, however, is the departure from their existing Station Street location. The relocation will provide an opportunity for expansion for the business owners,” reads the staff report.

After the public hearing, the proposal would go back to council for further consideration.
