Blank report cards being prepared

REPORT cards for students in the Coast Mountains school district will be going out with little more than a signature from principals or vice principals, says chair board Barry Pankhurst.

Pankhurst says the board received a notice from the education ministry saying reports cards still need to go out even if they do contain grading or comments from teachers.

Refusing to do report cards is part of the teachers’ so-far limited job action against the provincial government in hopes of applying pressure to win wage and benefit increases in a new contract.

Principals and vice principals will be responsible for  making the empty report cards, which will include a notice from the superintendent, said Pankhurst.

“Other than that it will be blank,” said Pankhurst adding that exceptions to this will be cases where a class was taught by a principal or a vice principal who would include grading and comments as usual for students in their classes.

He said parents can contact teachers to ask how their children are doing, and it is the understanding of the board that teachers will be open to that.

Regular parent teacher interviews have not been cancelled, although Pankhurst said he is not sure of the exact format on how those interviews will take place.

Pankhurst said one way or another, the report card issue needs to be resolved as soon as possible.

“Parents need to know what is happening to their kids in school,” he said.
