Blaze sends BX woman to hospital with injuries

BX-Swan Lake firefighters were called to a residence at Rimer and Pleasant Valley roads Thursday at about 8:18 a.m.

A Vernon area woman was sent to hospital after fire roared through her home.

BX-Swan Lake firefighters were called to a residence near the intersection of Stickle and Pleasant Valley roads Thursday at about 8:18 a.m.

“The occupant was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation and burns on her hands,” said fire chief Bill Wacey, adding that the woman kept entering the structure in an attempt to locate her cat.

“Flames were shooting out of the living room window and getting into the eaves.”

BX-Swan Lake crews were also busy responding to a flipped school bus with students aboard, so the Vernon Fire Department was called into assist with the blaze.

“They actioned the fire and were able to get it out in about 20 minutes,” said Wacey.

There was extensive smoke and flame damage done to the home.

“The fire origin was a stove pipe coming out of the living room, where there was a pellet stove,” sad Wacey, adding that the investigation into the cause continues.

Emergency Social Services is providing assistance to the woman, and it’s not known if she had insurance.

Firefighters had not located the cat as of press time.
