BMO bank robbery suspect arrested

Vancouver Island man has been charged in connection with the March 23 armed robbery of the Salmon Arm BMO bank branch.

Derek Rocco, 31, was arrested the day after the robbery in Merritt.

As the result of an investigation led by the Salmon Arm RCMP, Rocco is facing charges of  robbery and wearing a disguise for the intent to commit an indictable offence. RCMP released the information today, Thursday, April 14.

The suspect was seen on bank surveillance footage wearing a grey-haired wig and a ball cap during the incident.

At the time of the robbery, a lone male suspect made away with an undisclosed amount of cash.

RCMP Investigators said lone man entered the bank at around 2:27 p.m. and approached a teller. Once at the teller, he produced a note and told teller to give him money, stating that if she didn’t do it quickly, there would be trouble.

The teller handed over an undisclosed amount of cash and the man immediately fled. No weapon was produced or seen during the incident.

No one in the bank was hurt.

Rocco remains in custody awaiting a court date.
