Bomb scare at Kwantlen’s Surrey campus

Police evacuated two classrooms Monday after a suspected pipe bomb was spotted.

A report of a pipe bomb caused the evacuation of two classrooms Monday at Kwantlen’s Surrey campus at 12666 72 Ave.

However, it turned out to be just a pipe.

Police received a report after 9 a.m. Monday from a staff member at Kwantlen Polytechnic University who said they saw what looked like a pipe bomb on a grassy area in the parking lot outside the Birch Building, which is near the receiving area of the school.

The metal pipe, which is sealed at both ends, appears have the potential to be an explosive.

Surrey RCMP Sgt. Drew Grainger said Monday  the pipe didn’t appear to have a detonation device attached to it.

With an abundance of caution, police evacuated two nearby classrooms and have sent in their explosives team to get a better look at the pipe.

At about 11 a.m. police deployed an explosives robot to examine it closely. The robot fired a shotgun blast into the pipe, which would have detonated it if it was an explosive.

It turned out to just be a metal pipe.
