Bowser bounder took the bait

Bait car lures 22-year-old to take a chance

Police aren’t saying much about why they decided to place a bait car in Bowser Monday night, but they did say they’re pleased with the result after arresting a 22-year-old Bowser man early Tuesday morning.

“We don’t want to reveal too much about our techniques,” said Oceanside RCMP Sergeant Darrell Robertson.

The bait car was placed in the Gainsberg Road area and, early Tuesday morning, the bait got a bite.

“Members of the Oceanside detachment of the RCMP arrested a 22-year-old male from the Bowser area for theft of a motor vehicle,” Robertson said, noting the suspect was arrested without incident.

Further investigation, he said, has linked the man to two residential break and enters, along with seven other thefts from vehicles in that area.  Charges in those matters are pending.

Robertson said the arrest  was a victory for the recently-established RCMP Crime Reduction Unit.

“It is often said that 90 per cent of crime is committed by the same 10 per cent of the criminal population.

“The bait car program continues to be an excellent resource for police to catch car thieves in the act and apprehend them.”
