The Okanagan Boys and Girls Club will not receive funding from the City of Enderby to expand its after-school recreation program.
The program runs once a week at M.V. Beattie Elementary School.
The club asked the city for $7,453 in funding to offer the program for an additional day a week.
“The request was turned down because there are a bunch of new groups offering similar programs,” said Mayor Greg McCune.
In May, the Enderby Preschool Society received nearly $425,000 to create 33 new spaces, including 25 for children ages three-to-five, and eight spaces for multiple ages.
McCune said a local church group has also begun a successful, similar-type program.
Okanagan Boys and Girls Club North Okanagan area director Kirstie Blanleil presented to council in June.
She said the focus of the after-school program is to provide a sense of belonging, and that a “positive environment results in positive behaviour.”
The program, which is provided free of charge, focuses on leadership and recreation.
The club has said it is committed to continuing the one-day programs even if the funding request was not successful.
