Construction of the new roundabout at Victoria Road and Wright Street begins this Monday, August 15.

Crews from Speers Construction were out on Friday staking out the ground around the intersection.

“Traffic control will be in place for the duration of the construction period at the intersection, which is expected to continue through to late October,” said the City of Revelstoke in a news bulletin. “Drivers are reminded to keep to the speed limit, and obey all traffic control personnel and signs through construction zones.”

The roundabout is the first of a two-phase project to relieve congestion on the entrance to the city from the Trans-Canada Highway. Phase two will involve modifying the junction of Victoria Road and Mutas Road to block left turns into the Shell/Tim Hortons, and out of the McDonalds/A&W loop.

In a controversial move, council awarded the construction contract to Speers despite the fact they bid $272,000 than Jake & Jay Construction.
