Broad daylight break in

A local man has been charged and remains in custody after a brazen daylight robbery in the Fort.

The Source store was broken into by two perpetrators just after 5 p.m. on Easter Monday. Police said witnesses called in immediately, having seen a man getting into the store via the front door on Douglas St.

Witnesses provided a description, and twenty year old Darren James A’Huille was located in possession of electronic equipment believed to be from the store. He has since been charged with one count of break and enter and one count of possession of stolen property.

Co-owner of the store Sandie Ayers was grateful the witnesses called in the robbery and was glad some of the stolen goods were recovered.

An estimated $5,000 was stolen from the store, but almost $3,000 was recovered when A’Huille was apprehended.

The store did have surveillance cameras in place, and the footage of the robbery has been turned over to police, who continue to investigate the incident.

This was the first time the store had been broken into, and Ayers hopes the surveillance cameras and now additional bars on the windows will help to prevent further incidents.

“To do it at that time of day…that’s pretty brave,” she said.

Ayers said the thieves came in through the front door and seemed to know what they were going for and then left out the back door.

The store was open again on Tuesday morning, and has replaced the broken glass in both the window and the display cases.
