Burns Lake’s legion looking for more members

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 50 in Burns Lake is currently trying to attract more members.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 50 in Burns Lake is currently trying to attract more members.

Although the Burns Lake branch has over 100 members, only 20 are considered active members.

“We have a general meeting once a month and most of the time we have a hard time getting enough people for a quorum, which is 13,” explained legion member Lana Williams.

Members have a chance to belong to a national organization that supports Canadian veterans and promotes remembrance. It also gives them a chance to support the community through programs and activities. In addition, the Legion says this is an opportunity for people to expand their skills by helping seniors and participating in sports, public speaking and social activities.

Furthermore, legion members have access to a list of discounted products and services through the legion’s member benefits package.

Founded in 1926, Legion membership is currently more than 400,000 across Canada. At one time, the Legion existed solely to help Canadian veterans and to perpetuate the memory of those who died in battle. Although these remain the primary concerns, community service as well as programs for youth and seniors are a vital part of the Legion’s mission today.

In addition to social actives and community programs, the legion is a strong supporter of the development of youth leaders.

People interested in becoming a member should pick up an application form at the Burns Lake branch on Francois Lake Drive. The Burns Lake branch is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m; closed Sundays and Mondays.
