Bus parking under review

Suggestion of using area next to St. James School for tour bus and RV parking reconsidered

A possible solution to tour bus parking is being reconsidered.

Some members of Vernon council are not sure about a staff recommendation to use an area next to St. James School for tour bus and RV parking during the summer.

“That’s a busy road with people from East Hill taking a short cut to downtown,” said Coun. Brian Quiring.

Council, though, supports a staff recommendation to use the area next to Beairsto Elementary School for tour bus parking in the summer.

Staff is also being asked to consider tour bus parking at Civic Arena.

“That’s a great location. It’s a big parking lot and it’s close to downtown,” said Quiring.

South Vernon trail gets funded

The money’s been found to improve safety along a Vernon trail.

City council has agreed to spend $23,750 to construct an additional light and realign fencing on a trail between 25th and 19th avenues, next to the sewer treatment plant.

“People there have said they really need it,” said Coun. Catherine Lord.

A 50-name petition was presented to the city  last August demanding improvements to the path and specifically lighting.

There is a concern that existing conditions are too dark and people may be at risk when they walk to nearby grocery stores, restaurants and banks.

Staff had recommended that no improvements to the path be considered until an audit of all paths and connectors in Vernon and integration of the audit into the sustainable infrastructure investment plan.
