G’s Formula in Duncan is doing its part to help animals impacted by the ongoing wildfires in the province’s interior.
Nelli Calveley is a co-owner of the store that sells gastrointestinal aids for horses and dogs across Canada.
She said newscasts showing pets and farm animals being forced from their homes as the wildfires advanced prompted her to begin working with the Victoria-based Rain Coast Dog Rescue Society to send assistance for those looking after the animals.
Calveley said she has talked to the owners of Buckerfield’s, Share-Kare and the Equine Emporium and they have agreed to accept cash donations as well as food, beds, collars and leashes that are in good condition to send to help the animals.
The supplies will be sent to distribution points in the Interior by truck.
“We can only imagine if these were our animals, so we want to do all we can to help out at this time,” Calveley said.
Calveley can be reached at nelli@gsorganicsolutions.com, or call 1-250-516-5118.
Local Pizza Hut raises more than $1,000 for diabetes
Duncan’s Pizza Hut has raised $1,169 for the annual Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes that was held in June.
In total, all the 48 participating Pizza Hut restaurants across B.C. have raised a total of $100,000 for this year’s Telus Walk through various fundraisers.
In recognition of its efforts, JDRF awarded Pizza Hut with the highly competitive 2018 Corporate Achievement Award.
JDRF is a global leader in the search for an end to type 1 diabetes through both research funding and advocacy.
This marks the 11th year of Pizza Hut’s involvement with JDRF and brings the total funds raised by the restaurant chain to $385,000.
“We are very proud of our restaurant teams and our customers’ overwhelming support for this very important cause,” said Mike Cyr, president of Pizza Hut Restaurants.
“Pizza Hut strongly believes in getting involved locally, which is why it chose an organization like JDRF.”
Equine Emporium owner celebrating milestone
Equine Emporium is celebrating its first anniversary with Makayla Mercer as the store owner.
Mercer took over the business, which sells mainly quality western and English horse tack, apparel, boots, hats and other accessories, last year after the former owner retired.
The store, located at the Crossroads Centre on the corner of Koksilah Road and the Trans-Canada Highway, will host a customer appreciation day on Sept. 15 to celebrate Mercer’s first-year anniversary at the store.
Mercer said Equine Emporium will hold a store-wide sale on that day, with everything going for 20 per cent off.
She said the 4H Horse Club will also be on hand to hold a barbecue with sales by donation.
“It’s been an awesome year for me and the store,” Mercer said.
“I’ve been attending horse shows and other events to get the store out in the community more, and the people have been really great.”
