Business notes: Spade Excavating rides to the rescue of Malahat Legion

Kudos to a Shawnigan Lake business for coming to the rescue when a major flood threatened the Royal Canadian Legion Malahat #134 Branch.

Kudos to a Shawnigan Lake business for coming to the rescue when a major flood threatened the Royal Canadian Legion Malahat #134 Branch.

Judy Bobke has high praise for Spade Excavating who showed up after an underground stream sent water flowing into the parking lot and blocking the front entrance of the Legion.

“It wasn’t safe to come into the Legion no matter how much salt we put out and the salting company put on,” Bobke said.

“Craig Partridge, the owner of Spade Excavating showed up at the Malahat Legion and volunteered his equipment and his men to help with the water problem that we were having. Grant Anderson, Greg Purdy and Steven Hancar and Mid Island Aggregates Russ Crawford all helped.

“It was wonderful support for the Legion to receive such a needed quick response and gift from this generous company owner and his friends and employees.”

Coast Capital Savings, Canada’s largest credit union by membership is donating a total of $75,000 to food banks across the province. Duncan Cowichan Valley Basket Society is receiving $3,000 to help families and young people in the Cowichan Valley with food security through the holiday season.

“Coast Capital is committed to giving back to the communities where we live and work. We work to build a richer future for youth in our communities and we know that at least one third of those who access food banks in Canada are children and youth,” said Maureen Young, director of Community Leadership at Coast Capital Savings.

“We hope that our donation will help make the season brighter and merrier for those who need it most.”

Laura Lansink, executive director of Food Banks BC, said support from corporate donors like Coast Capital is vital to the successful operation of food banks, and donations of funds are able to go even further than food, thanks to the buying power that food banks have.

“Thanks to relationships with grocers and farmers, food banks across B.C. are able to maximize donations to make a significant impact on hunger in B.C. This means that Coast Capital’s donation of $75,000 translates into 225,000 healthy, nutritious meals,” said Lansink.

“As demand grows over the holiday season, Coast Capital’s generous donation will mean that much more to vulnerable families and young people across the province.”

Coast Capital Savings is one of Canada’s most significant corporate community investors with seven per cent of its budgeted pre-tax profits invested into its communities annually. This year alone, that totals almost $6 million and more than $71 million since 2000.
