Businesses lend a hand

Elderly couple left in cold after contractor bankrupts in middle of renovations

Parksville businesses are leading the way in helping a Nanaimo woman whose house renovation contractor went bankrupt.

Dan Poirier of Parksville’s Poirier Painting had been involved as the paint contractor on the Nanaimo house when the main contractor filed for bankruptcy, leaving the house gutted to the bare rafters.

“Dan’s definitely got wings on his shoulders, he’s been an angel organizing this all,” said homeowner Ramona Passarello.

Passarello said she was crushed by the initial problem, but she said she is now overwhelmed by the show of support from the local construction industry.

Poirier told Passarello he’d stay on and make sure the work got done and he’s been busy ever since drumming up donations and support.

“It’s like it’s his full-time job,” Passarello said.

After a piece ran on CHEK-TV, Passarello said she was flooded with offers of material and/or labour, but that was daunting since, as she pointed out, “I’m not a project manager, I had no idea how to put it all together.”

As the weather turned and rain was flooding through the half-removed roof, she said another angel stepped in — Mike Klassen, owner of Parksville’s Whole Show Restorations, who offered to act as project manager and help co-ordinate what needed to be done and how to best use the help offered.

Passarello said Cloverdale Paint has offered to provide the paint and United Flooring the floors. If people are still looking to help they could use insulation, drywall, lumber, bathroom fixtures, electrical supplies and eventually grass seed she said.

She said that while originally the work was supposed to be done by mid-December at this point she’ll be happy if it can at least be sealed up dry and safe by Christmas for her parents who live in the house.

People can contact her directly at 1-250-3824 and she will co-ordinate with Klassen.
