Busy weekend for Nelson police

Nelson police had a busy weekend with over 96 calls for service between Thursday and Monday morning.

The Nelson Police Department had a busy weekend with over 96 calls for service between Thursday and Monday morning.

There was a commercial break and enter to a local bar on Baker St. during the overnight hours of Saturday-Sunday.  Suspects gained access with force and stole money, electronics, and some alcohol.  Total losses are still being added up.  The investigation is ongoing.

A man known to Nelson Police was arrested after a fight at Cottonwood Park on Saturday.  The victim was struck in the head and face, resulting in a trip to Kootenay Lake Hospital and a possible broken jaw.  As of press time on August 23, the suspect faced a charge of assault with a weapon causing bodily harm, along with charges for failure to comply with an undertaking given to an officer in charge.

A serious motor vehicle collision occurred on Hwy 3A/6 just east of Government Rd on Saturday morning.  A westbound vehicle allegedly crossed a double solid line, sideswiped an oncoming vehicle, crashed into the rock wall, and then the driver fled on foot.  Nelson Police located the driver in a Rosemont yard and took him into custody without incident.  After further investigation he was released with several charges under the Motor Vehicle Act.  Both vehicles suffered severe damages.

Nelson Police took multiple calls for bear activity.  All calls were checked to ensure the safety of Nelson residents.  BC Conservation Service was also contacted and updated.

Nelson Police continues to see drivers under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.  This weekend four drivers lost their licenses for between 24 hours and 90 days.  Their vehicles were towed and they may face further charges.  Nelson Police would like to remind residents that it is everyone’s responsibility to reduce the amount of impaired driving in our community.  Stop friends and family before they get behind the wheel impaired.  Call 911 to report impaired drivers.  And, if drinking, please don’t drive.  Take a cab, walk, or call a friend.  The alternative could cost lives.
