KEVIN CANTELON, 47
Occupation/background:
Lawyer for 17 years, now non-practising. Currently working as a fundraising consultant for local charities. Prior to practising law, worked for the Ministry of Forests and in the forest industry for six years.
Why are you running for city council?
I am unhappy with the behavior and approach of the current city council. I believe that with my training and experience I could really help the City of Nanaimo to realize its potential. I know how to work in difficult, contentious environments and achieve results. I have the expertise to carefully review all the decisions put to council by the city.
What will be your priorities if you are elected and what do you want to accomplish in the 15 months before the 2018 civic election?
With only 15 months until the next general election, I think it is important not promise results I have no time to achieve. In the time I will have, I hope to do the following:
I want to set an example of civility and behaviour that the people of Nanaimo expect from their councillors.
I want to begin to hold the city managers to better account by thoroughly reviewing and understanding all items on the council agendas. I will not allow any matter to pass without first asking relevant questions.
I look forward to participating the public review process to determine the future of 1 Port Drive. I hope to see a plan emerge which allows access and use to all residents of the Nanaimo area.
