Byelection set for Oyama

Lake Country will hold a byelection to fill the Oyama ward seat left vacant by the death of Owen Dickie

Oyama residents will be heading to the polls.

The District of Lake Country will hold a byelection to fill the Oyama ward seat left vacant by the death of Coun. Owen Dickie Monday.

“It will be after the May provincial election and likely in June,” said Mayor James Baker.

Under provincial legislation, a byelection must be held if there is more than a year until the next regular election. The next civic election is in November 2018.

Details on the nomination period for the byelection aren’t known yet, but Baker believes candidates will step forward.

“They (Oyama) have been well represented over the years and there will be somebody who believes they can do the same,” he said.

Council held a regular meeting Tuesday, and it was the first time elected officials and district staff had gathered since Dickie’s death from cancer.

“There were a lot of accolades for Owen and condolences extended to his family,” said Baker.

Dickie had been a district councillor since 2011.

A celebration of life for Dickie will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Oyama Community Hall.
