Plans are already in the works for another successful Caledonia Classic Dog Sled race in Fort St. James on Feb. 24 – 26.

Organizers, Joanne Vinnedge and Craig Houghton are thrilled to see what another year will have in store.

The two have helped organize the event since the very beginning and they have seen many changes over the years.

“Mushers from all over attend the Classic,” Houghton said.

The Caledonia Classic has been a staple of the winter season in Fort St. James for about 19 years and it is the only race that combines sprint, mid-distance and long distance races into one exciting weekend.

“The last two winters, we’ve had to hold the event at the end of Dickenson’s Road because of the warmer weather conditions. The lake at Cottonwood wasn’t frozen,” Houghton said.

“But it was still being well attended, if not more so. The Kid and Mutt Race and the Politician’s Event continue to be popular and those are planned again for the upcoming Classic as well.”

The Caledonia Classic takes pride in knowing that all animals are well looked after and that the event continues to attract mushers from all over.

“We hope to have the event at Cottonwood again but it is weather dependant,” Vinnedge said.

“And we are so thankful to our volunteers. It wouldn’t be possible without them.”
