Campfires are now allowed within the City of Castlegar.
A ban was put into place across the province in late June. That ban has now been lifted for some areas, including most of the Kootenays and the Castlegar area.
As always, Category 2 and Category 3 open fires remain prohibited within city boundaries. In addition sky lanterns, fireworks, burn barrels or burn cages, binary exploding targets, tiki and similar kinds of torches remain banned.
“The combination of a return to more seasonal weather conditions with rainfall and cooler temperatures have decreased wildfire danger ratings within the city,” says Castlegar’s fire chief Sam Lattanzio.
Campfires must be no larger than one meter across and one meter high and must be contained within a circular ring of rock, brick, stainless steel etc.

Current bans on larger Category 2 or Category 3 fires remain in place across the Kootenays and further restrictions prohibit the use of burn barrels or cages, sky lanterns and fireworks, according to the Southeast Fire Centre.
