• On yer bike: How about a 148 kilometre bike ride to mark 148 years of Canada?
The BC Randonneurs are hosting the Canada Day Populaire, a ride that starts in Yorkson Community Park. The cost is $20 per rider and people can sign up in advance at www.randonneurs.bc.ca.
The route takes cyclists from Fort Langley, site of the official proclamation of British Columbia in 1858, to Matsqui and Old Clayburn, across Sumas Prairie, up Sumas Mountain, through Veddar Crossing, back across Sumas Prairie via Huntingdon and through Aldergrove to Fort Langley.
• Cheers: The annual BBQ fundraiser for the Langley Memorial Hospital is July 1 at Chaberton Estate Winery. Doris’ Deli will be barbecuing a selection of European smokies and weiners. This event runs noon to 4 p.m. with music by the local band, Heist.
• Don’t forget dessert: Stop by Willowbrook Shopping Centre for a free piece of birthday cake from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (or while limited quantities last) on July 1 at Centre Court by The Body Shop.
• July 1 kickoff: Bard in the Valley (BIV) is presenting Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost on three outdoor stages in Langley this summer. The play opens on Canada Day in Fort Langley for the first of two performances, then moves to the Township 7 Winery for five performances. The play will then be performed on the theatre company’s home stage, the Spirit Square Stage in downtown Langley City in late July and early August. There is no charge for admission for the performances in Fort Langley and on the Spirit Square Stage. Enjoy this free, outdoor theatrical experience.
