The Canadian Institute of Mining (CIM) donated $30,000 to the College of New Caledonia on Friday to help support those students interested in a career in mining.

A total of $28,000 will go into an endowment fund, which will continuously generate scholarships and bursaries. The remaining $2,000 will be handed out next year as four awards worth $500 each.

“The mining industry is a rapidly growing field with excellent career opportunities,” said Jamie Hull, Vice Chair of the North Central B.C. branch of the CIM.

“We wanted to help CNC students attain the education that will allow them to excel in this growing industry, which has a very bright future in northern B.C.,” said Hull, who is also the general manager for Wolftek Industries in Prince George.

CNC’s mining certificate program has been successfully delivered at the Fort St. James and Burns Lake campuses, with more than 80 per cent of graduates earning jobs.

The program is offered on a rotational basis at CNC’s regional campuses and is currently underway in Quesnel and Vanderhoof.
