A man who capsized in his kayak near the Comox Marina Friday morning has died.

Reports indicate around 9:30 a.m., the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre received a report of a man clinging to a capsized kayak in the area behind St. Joseph’s General Hospital.

The man was wearing a personal flotation device.

Members of the Royal Canadian Marine Search & Rescue Station 60 Comox, Comox Fire Rescue and BC Ambulance attended the scene.

Police confirm the file has now been turned over to the B.C. Coroners Service for further investigation.

This is the second incident in less than a month involving a kayaker in distress in the Comox Valley.

On Dec. 17, 2016, two friends set out on a kayaking expedition from Union Bay to Tree Island. About one kilometre from shore, a 23-year-old man from Courtenay fell into the water and his body was recovered a day later.
