A 29-year-old Fort St. James mother of three has been killed and several others injured in a two-vehicle collision on Friday evening, just east of Vanderhoof.

Jennifer Joseph was a passenger in an eastbound 2006 Hyundai Accent that was being driven by a 28-year-old female, also from Fort St. James.

Police say the driver of the vehicle lost control and crossed over the centre line, colliding head-on with a westbound 1997 GMC Jimmy at approximately 6 p.m., 22 kilometers east of Vanderhoof.

A nine-year-old girl and a two-month old infant who were traveling with Joseph were transported to St. John Hospital in Vanderhoof along with their driver were they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The four occupants of the westbound vehicle, including three children were taken to University Hospital of Northern British Columbia Hospital in Prince George, were they were treated for minor injuries.

Highway 16 was closed for a number of hours while RCMP dealt with the scene of the crash.

RCMP say road conditions were treacherous at the time of the accident after a period of heavy snowfall, followed by freezing rain and dropping temperatures.

Police issued a statement on Friday asking people not to travel on the highways in the area unless absolutely necessary.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed this crash, or who may have information regarding the collision, to call the RCMP or Crimestoppers.
