A car crashed off the side of Departure Bay Road last night and the driver was ticketed for leaving the scene of an accident.

Police and Nanaimo Fire Rescue responded at about 8:15 p.m. Sunday after a car went down an embankment and into a wooded area off Departure Bay Road near the Hammond Bay Road intersection.

According to the Nanaimo RCMP, the driver and passenger left the scene of the accident before emergency responders arrived. There were no reported injuries.

The driver, tracked down later by police, was issued tickets for failing to remain at the scene of an accident and driving without due care and attention. Investigators couldn’t pursue the possibility of impaired driving charges due to the time delay between the incident and when police caught up with the driver, said RCMP.
