A driver was not seriously injured after her car rolled down an embankment on Highway 4.
On Saturday, Jan. 5 at 8:38 p.m., the Port Alberni RCMP responded to a call from the driver of a car that rolled down a steep embankment on the Hump.
The driver, a 72-year-old Port Alberni resident, was traveling westbound over the Hump on Highway 4 coming into Port Alberni when she swerved to avoid a large branch laying on the road. She lost control of her vehicle and the Toyota Yaris left the roadway and rolled down a steep embankment, landing back on its tires.
The driver and only occupant remained safely in her vehicle thanks to her seatbelt, and was able to call for help. Police, the fire department and BC Ambulance Services had to search for the woman because she didn’t know exactly where she was. First Responders quickly located the woman still seated in her vehicle and the woman was brought safely back up the embankment. She was taken to the hospital as a precaution and later released.
“It was dark and raining, and coupled with more strong winds, the highway was littered with debris,” explained Cpl. Amelia Hayden of the Port Alberni RCMP. “Drivers are reminded especially with the weather that we’ve had recently to be prepared for the unexpected as they travel our local highways. Slow down, look ahead and be vigilant. There is still a lot of debris on the roadsides, with more coming down when the wind picks up.”
