A number of residents at a Kelowna care home were startled late Saturday night when they were forced out their homes after a fire was lit in their activity room.

Kelowna Fire Department received a direct Alarm from White Heather Care Home at  3728 Casorso Rd.

“Upon arrival the first arriving engine was met by the charge nurse, who stated there was a small fire in the activity room,” said platoon captain Tim Light.

“Residents of the facility were evacuated outside at first and when conditions permitted the residents were sheltered in an area of the facility that was unaffected by the incident.”

Luckily, the sprinkler system extinguished the fire prior to KFD’s arrival, but fire personnel needed shut the water off to the sprinkler system

From that point, crews on scene set up ventilation to clear the smoke from the affected suites and hallways.

KFD personnel remain on scene assisting in mitigating the water damage resulting from the activated sprinkler. RCMP are involved in the investigation as this was a deliberately set fire.

Light said sprinkler systems save lives make sure your system is serviced regularly.
