The year-end building permit report for the City of Castlegar shows that COVID-19 didn’t slow down construction in the city.
The City of Castlegar issued 253 building permits in 2020 with a total value of $16.3 million. That is more than double the 2019 total of about $7 million.
Seventeen new single-family homes account for $5.5 million of the total. Residential alterations totaled $1.94 million. Commercial alterations totaled $2.3 million. New industrial projects totaled $5.3 million. Institutional alterations totaled $1.1 million.
Package delivery companies were responsible for the $5.3 million in new industrial projects. The FedEx distribution centre accounts for about $4.5 million and the Alopex distribution centre accounts for $786,000.
Other big ticket items included about $670,000 for the Millennium Park washroom addition started in October, the McDonald’s restaurant renovations and major renovations at Castlegar Hyundai.
“In spite of everything,” said city councilor Dan Rye, “People are still buying, still building.”
