Castlegar council approves bylaws and grants

Financial plan and taxes get final approval at council meeting as well as several grants.

Bylaw adoption

City council passed four bylaws at Monday’s council meeting. Final approval was given to the five year financial plan, 2016 tax rates, the storm water management parcel tax and its accompanying parcel tax roll. The five year plan and tax rates are part of the budgeting process and the parcel tax will see a $150 per year tax added to each city parcel over the next ten years in order to fund upgrades to the city’s storm water system.

Emergency services camp grant

Council approved a $200 grant to the Nelson Police Department to assist with the costs of conducting the 2016 Emergency Services Camp to be held April 29, 30 and May 1, at L.V. Rogers Secondary School in Nelson.

The Nelson Police Department, School District #8 teachers, Nelson Fire Rescue, Nelson RCMP, Nelson Search and Rescue, the Canadian Armed Forces and the BC Ambulance Service work together to create a program for youth to understand emergency services that are included in the career market. This is the 17th year this program has been offered.

The program is designed to provide a police academy environment for 25 local students in Grades 11 and 12. The organizers are currently accepting applications from students attending area high schools.

Roller derby grant

Council also approved a grant of $350 to assist with the costs associated with the Dam City Rollers Women’s Roller Derby Team hosting a Roller Derby three game event on May 14 in Castlegar. The event will feature teams from Spokane, Wa. and Fernie, BC.
