A local couple is preparing to do something outside of their comfort zone.
Geri-Lynn Rempel and Brent Faynor are taking on the challenge to help support a good cause. They will be rappelling down the 20-story Guinness Tower in Vancouver to raise money for Easter Seal House and Camp Winfield.
The pair are participating in Drop Zone Vancouver, a fundraiser organized by Easter Seals British Columbia. They have set a goal of $3,000.
Rempel, who is afraid of heights, is determined to overcome her fear for the cause.
“I think the best fundraisers really push you out of your comfort zone, and some of the best things in life worth doing are what you are afraid of,” said Rempel.
“Knowing there is this organization out there that is struggling right now — if I can do a little bit to alleviate that and keep kids happy and help them — I will do what I can.”
She hopes her nerves will vanish on the way down, which can take between five and 15 minutes.
“I think turning your back to the ledge and that first step will probably be the hardest and most intense.”
When Rempel told her partner she was going to do something terrifying and explained what it was, Faynor said, “That sounds more fun than terrifying.”
So Rempel replied “Oh, does it? Then we will fundraise double the amount and you can do it too. We’ll see how fun it is when you are standing up there.”
The easiest way to donate to the cause is to go to dropzone.bc.ca and select the “donate” tab, you can then search under teams for Geri-Lynn and Brent.
Donations have also been coming in around town at bakes sales, Canada Day celebrations and directly to the team.
“This money actually helps people in Castlegar,” explained Joanne Baker, who is helping the pair with their fundraising. “A lot of local people, when their kids are sick, have stayed at Easter Seal House.”
