Cause of Easter Sunday fire still unknown

Significant smoke damage done to residence on Vernon's 14th Street

It’s still not known what caused a fire at a Vernon residence Easter Sunday morning.

Firefighters were called to the 2100 block of 14th Street just before 7 a.m.

“The cause is still under investigation,” said firefighter Brent Bond of the blaze, which began in the basement.

One person was inside the residence at the time and they were able to escape uninjured.

“There was smoke coming from the house when we arrived,” said Bond.

“We entered the residence and we kept it (fire) to the room of origin. There was significant smoke damage.”

The resident has been receiving lodging assistance from Emergency Social Services and a restoration company will be removing the smoke damage.

“They should be back in there fairly soon,” said Bond of the resident.
