A 67-year-old Cawston man has died after falling from a cliff near Big White Sunday afternoon.

Kelowna RCMP received a report of a single vehicle crash on the 201 forest service road near Big White Sunday at 2:12 p.m.

According to Const. Kris Clark, the man was picking rocks with some friends when he noticed his parked Jeep began rolling toward a cliff.

“It appears that the vehicle started to move, he went to save it and figured, really too late, that he wasn’t going to be able to save it,” said Clark.

“He basically jumped too late from the vehicle to save himself, unfortunately.”

The Cawston man fell approximately 50 metres, while his Jeep continued down the hill for 30 more metres.

He suffered fatal injuries from the fall and his body was recovered by Big White Fire Department personnel.

No one else was injured in the incident; Clark said alcohol was not a factor.

The man’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Kelowna RCMP continue to assist the BC Coroners Service in the investigation.
