When a new CBC Kamloops bureau was created in 2012, CBC Radio switched the Revelstoke listening area from the Kelowna-based Daybreak South to the Kamloops-based Daybreak Kamloops.
Residents protested, arguing they weren’t consulted. They asked city council to intervene. Council opted to request the change, but bureaucratic bungling led to a big delay. And more delay.
The request led to an online poll, in which residents expressed their preference for CBC Kelowna. CBC executives then made the decision to switch back. The final hold-up was a regulatory OK from federal radio regulator the CRTC, which came in a Dec. 11 decision.
Johnny Michel is the senior managing director of CBC British Columbia and Alberta. He said the CBC had received residents’ signals. “We have heard the voices and passion of loyal CBC Radio listeners in Revelstoke loud and clear. The move back to Kelowna’s programming to Revelstoke just reinforces CBC’s commitment to provide the most relevant content for our many communities.”
