The cause of a fire Tuesday is officially undetermined, but it wasn’t likely malicious.
A row of cedar bushes went up in flames just before 5 p.m. Tuesday at 5000 27th Avenue, behind OK Builders.
“We had lots of people who could see the fire,” said Dean Wakefield, an investigator with the Vernon Fire Department.
“When those things go up, they go up. It’s spectacular when the fire starts hopping from one to another.”
About 18 seven-foot-tall cedars were destroyed by the fire, which did not threaten any structures.
“People in the area reported seeing kids with sparklers (before the blaze began),” said Wakefield.
“I have found remnants of sparklers down the road and I have turned them over to the RCMP. It could have been caused by sparklers but I haven’t found exactly that.”
Wakefield says that while the fire should not have occurred, there doesn’t appear to have been intent to start the blaze.
There was another fire Tuesday but that case has been concluded.
Coldstream firefighters responded to reports of a garage fire on Hymar Place, off Rockland Drive, at 2:38 p.m.
“The bench and cabinets were on fire but the owner knocked it down with a fire extinguisher,” said Wakefield, who participated in the investigation.
The cause is a soldering gun used by the owner.
