Rabbi Shmuly Hecht of Beth Shalom Synagogue and Community Centre in Kelowna places candles in a six-foot menorah set up outside the Java Jive Coffee Shop on Dec. 18 to mark the third night of Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights. This is the first time there has been a public celebration of the eight-day Jewish holiday in Salmon Arm. A small crowd gathered to participate in the candle lighting and listen to the Hebrew blessings.
