Central Saanich Police need the public’s help after a break in occurred at Stelly’s Secondary School.

Around 1 a.m. on Thursday, June 15 a glass door was broken on the south west side of the school. The culprit – possibly more than one – is still unknown to police.

Nothing from the school was stolen or damaged, aside from the door, said Cpl. Dan Cottingham, community engagement officer with the Service. He added that the ones responsible gained entry to the school, but didn’t get too far before tripping the alarm system, fleeing when it went off.

At this point, Cottingham said, there are no real leads so the Service is relying on any information the public may have.

“There were no witnesses, no videos – nothing in the way of a suspect. You always kind of assume it’s students, but I certainly wouldn’t want to paint any students poorly, of course, if it wasn’t them,” he said.

Stelly’s Vice-Principal Gord Redlin said students and parents needn’t worry.

“School is carrying on as per normal. It just seems like it was a random act of senseless vandalism,” he said. “It’s really unfortunate, it’s an expense that doesn’t need to happen.”

Cottingham said he hopes a witness will come forward.

“Kids talk – if it’s someone from the school hopefully they’ve talked to someone about it and then those witnesses do the right thing and then come forward.”

Anyone with any information about this break in is encouraged to call the Central Saanich Police Service at 250-652-4441 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
